In a money driven global market that is asking for more and more communication facilities, the novel exploitation of existing infrastructures is a plus and a path to success. Starting from this idea, a novel and revolutionary proposal in the world of communication and data broadcasting was pioneered. The proposal is a broadcasting system capable of transmitting over an existing standard satellite TV channel, belonging to a widespread network, a high quality, rapid and low cost data stream that may be received with a domestic satellite receiver on an ordinary personal computer. The following paper starts describing the principles of exploitation of a standard PAL or NTSC channel in order to transmit a 2 Mbits/s data stream. The QPSK encoder and decoder is presented and the video modulation band exploitation is described. Then the peculiarities concerning the protocols, the transmission system and the reception system are pointed out. Two successfully test phases, one with a pilot group of one hundred European users and another on an intercontinental area, are reported. Finally the results coming from the testing phase under wide environmental conditions are reported and commented.
