Use of antimicrobials in wound management

Antimicrobial drugs are used to alter the microbial population in which they are placed. An antimicrobial drug is indicated as a component of wound management only when its particular target organism(s) contributes to the formation of the wound or interferes with repair. Antimicrobial medication should be considered an adjunct to the general care of wounds rather than a substitute for lavage, drainage, or other physical care intended to aid healing, such that routine use of antiseptics or antibacterial formulations on the surface of a wound is questionable. Determining the indication for use of these medications becomes a matter of clinical judgment, experience, and consideration of pertinent medical information, including the results of diagnostic procedures.
