Drama historians have treated Sir Richard Steele's return to Drury Lane as the main event of London's theatre world in 1721 but the repertory is equally worthy of attention. In addition to new comedies that present and dissect the political and economic scamming and screening that enabled Robert Walpole's ascent to power, Aaron Hill's and Edward Young's innovative tragedies "Fatal Curiosity" and "The Revenge" explore the destructive implications of an emerging economy built on colonial commerce and the slave trade.
