摘要
In this article a concept for an all-optical circuit-switched network is presented that utilizes near future Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) and Optical Code Division Multiplexing (O-CDM) technologies. Optical communication system configurations currently fall into two broad categories: optical-electrical-optical (OEO) and. optical-optical-optical (OOO) solutions; with the OOO configuration being the most optimal since data does not require a periodic conversion from the optical to electrical state. Technologies such as Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM), and Code Division Multiplexing (CDM) are well established in electronic systems, and have an equivalent optical technology that is currently under development. The key optical technologies required for the migration from OEO to OOO systems are briefly described, and short descriptions of Optical-TDM (OTDM), Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM), and Optical-CDM are also provided. A simple algorithm to select the optimal Wavelength and Code for an optical circuit is presented and the design is expected to increase the capacity of proposed optical networks.
