Modeling permittivity and tangent loss in dielectric materials using finite element method and Monte Carlo simulation

Finite Element Simulation and Monte-Carlo methods are used to calculate the effective permittivity (epsilon) and tangent loss (tan(delta)) of a composite dielectric. Wakino et al. has used this approach to study the dependence of epsilon on volume ratio and compared it with the Series, Parallel and Lichteneker formula. In this paper, the modeling has been further extended to include tan(delta) also, and the results are compared to well known Effective Medium and Empirical Models. For epsilon, it was found that both the symmetric Bruggeman and Wakino formula are close to the numerical results for all volume fractions (f). For tan(delta), the numerical results follow the typical pattern of symmetric Bruggeman formula. There is also found to be a logarithmic relationship between the effective permittivity and tangent losses.
