摘要:
Circadian oscillators have been known to be located in photoreceptors such as the eye, pineal and deep brain (hypothalamus) in birds and lower vertebrates. This suggests the close relationship between circadian systems and photoreceptors. In mammals, suprachiasmatic nucleus is the site for the circadian oscillator and it has a direct input of light signals from the eye. In this paper, we review retinal and extra-retinal photoreception and circadian rhythms in vertebrates based mainly on results obtained in our laboratory and discuss the relationship between photoreceptors and circadian oscillators, and we also report our recent results on the role of the eyes in circadian locomotor and feeding/drinking rhythms in Japanese quail.
