摘要
In this essay I clarify the implications of Arnold's discouragement of artistic creation in "The Function of Criticism at the Present Time." By reading this seminal essay in three surprisingly interrelated contexts Arnold's attitude toward millenarianism, the "functions" of poetry in Arnold's oeuvre, and Plato's Theaetetus - demonstrate that Arnold's claim his age is unsuited for aesthetic production entails nothing less than the renouncement of the possibility of social renovation. The picture that emerges from my analysis challenges interpretations that stress Arnold's role as a proponent of middle class hegemony while clearing the way for more sympathetic readings of his political commitments.
