The melting behaviour in the formation of molten pool and heat transfer is meaningful to understand the laser transmission welding. In view of the lack of research on the correlation between melting behaviour and heat transfer in the formation of molten pool during laser transmission welding, a 3D transient model based on finite volume method is established to simulate the molten pool formation during laser transmission between PET and SUS304. Simulation results are compared with the experimental results. The analysis in correlation with dimensionless number indicates that the effect of heat conduction is more evident than that of convection. Therefore, the temperature at the interface is the key to the formation of molten pool. At the same time, the size of the molten pool in the moving direction of the heat source mainly depends on the heat input and the rate of temperature drop.
