Potable groundwater in the Upper Silesia region occurs in the Cenozoic, Mesozoic and Paleozoic formations. Valuation of groundwater has been performed according to various hydrogeological conditions and by applying several quantitative and qualitative criteria. As the first stage, 18 major aquifers have been identified in the study area. They have then been valuated using a procedure which enables the identification of aquifers of fundamental importance for water supply and for management planning. This paper presents the hydrogeologic characteristics of these aquifers, the concept of their valuation and the results of this valuation.
