Efficacy of two Ethanolic Plant Extracts against the Pink Bollworm Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)

Toxic effect of the 70% aqueous ethanolic extracts of the two plants, Calotropis procera and Ocimum sanctum against the cotton pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunds.) was studied. Results showed that the LC50 values for C. procera extract was (0.14g /100 g diet) and but recorded (0.0032 g/100 g diet) for O. sanctum. Contents of the three heavy metals (lead, cadmium, and arsenic) in the two plant extracts were determined. Lead content in O. sanctum extract (19875.01 ug/l) was more than in C. procera extract (849.16 ug/l), while the content of cadmium in C. procera extract (10136.8 ug/l) was slightly more than that in O. sanctum extract (9652.61 ug/l). Arsenic was not detected in the two extracts. This study reported the relation between the activities of the two studied extracts against P. gossypiella and their heavy metal contents.
