Mossbauer investigation of the effect of electrochemical polishing on α-Fe(Mn) alloys

In this work we explore electrochemical-polishing for thinning Fe-Mn samples. We set out by studying with CEMS and XCMS a sample approximately 1 mm thick of a bee Fe-13.7 wt.% Mn alloy, and subjected it to electrochemical etching in a solution of 10% perchloric acid and 90% acetic acid solution. Afterwards, the sample was electrochemically thinned to reach the suitable thickness to perform transmission Mossbauer spectroscopy. This technique is sensitive to the different Fe-Mn configurations of the bcc-Fe(Mn) substitutional solid solution whose relative populations depend on the Mn concentration. After analysing the spectra, and considering a random distribution approximation model, we discuss the conditions in which electrochemical polishing can be used as a reliable method for thinning this type of samples.
