摘要
Recent Crane criticism links Crane's proliferative language to indeterminacy, dissipation, and the loss of meaning. I argue that we might better understand Crane's 'logic of metaphor' as a strategy of semantic dispersal and recovery. I examine homosexual figuration in three sections of Hart Crane's The Bridge: 'Ave Maria', 'The River', and 'Cape Hatteras'. Drawing on Paul Ricoeur's concept of 'metaphoric cognition' as well as Hart Crane's own 'logic of metaphor', I argue that The Bridge arches towards the recovery of homosexual meaning through the tensional experience of individual metaphoric moments.
