The paper presents an overview of the Ormen Lange pipeline engineering process from the early design studies until the presently ongoing activities of preparing for operation. In particular, ways of handling the following topics that presented unusual challenges are addressed: Pipeline routing and installation engineering Landfall design Free span design Seabed preparation techniques and tools Optimal combination of dredging and subsea rock installation Pipeline installation with tight laying tolerances Expansion design on extremely uneven seabed with soft soil conditions Loads from heavy trawl gear.
