Using a self-report questionnaire comprising 39 items, patients' satisfaction of patients of a psychiatric state hospital and patients of a psychiatric department of a general hospital was evaluated The response rate was 69,1 and 70%, respectively. Patients express satisfaction with both hospitals in general. Differences between satisfied and non-satisfied patients are found regarding the following aspects of inpatient care: Successful treatment, doctors attending on patients, participation in treatment decisions, varied treatment procedures, and free day planning. A general factor of satisfaction explaining 40% of variance could be revealed; the best determinants of overall satisfaction are successful treatment, doctors attending on patients, and staff attending on patients. Patients with subjective treatment success, less psychopathological symptoms, shorter course of illness, and higher expectations are more satisfied. None of social demographic and other disease related variables could be shown as significant predictors for satisfaction with inpatient care.
