摘要
The paper looks at the trend of urbanization in Asian countries and India which are quite different from those of the west. Considering the scale and severity of the associated problems such as growing urban population, housing, slums and squatter settlements, provision of jobs and basic essential services it is important that we get ready to plan for our urban settlements in the future. The issues of sustainability are closely linked to the nature and type of urbanization witnessed in the last few decades. Indian cities seem to exist simultaneously in two worlds. One the vast population of the urban poor and the other of rich and a rising middle class with their conspicuous consumption and demands. This has given rise to an unjust system that promotes social inequity, non inclusive planning and lopsided development. The study of the traditional Indian city and some of the lessons in planning thereof are of significance here. In addition to the efforts of the Government it has now become essential to involve both the private sector as well as the stakeholders in the process of planning at all levels.
