High-resolution X-ray diffraction has been used to characterize the structure of oxide scales grown during oxidation at 1173 K of cerium-modified stainless steels. The oxide scales consist of a mixture of Fe2O3 and Cr2O3, as well as spinels. Several oxidation treatments prior to cerium deposition have been applied. New phases, which are cerium-related, appear, depending on the pre-oxidation treatment. By comparing these results with previous ones on lanthanum-modified AISI 304 stainless steel, some possible explanations for the reactive-element effect are proposed.
