Influence of Bessel and Bessel-Gauss beams on the point spread function and the encircled energy

The influence of Bessel and Bessel-Gauss beams acting as a combined filter of amplitude and phase on the point spread function and the encircled energy for an optical system having a spherical aberration have been investigated numerically. The maximum values of the axial and the transverse irradiance distributions for these beams are higher in an optical system having a spherical aberration than in an aberration-free optical system, but the maximum values for a clear aperture and a truncated Gaussian beam decrease when the spherical aberration increases. We know from this paper that both Bessel and Bessel-Gauss beams have a superb effect which compensates for an aberrated wavefront caused by a spherical aberration and that these beams can be used in order to improve the image-forming ability of an optical system having spherical aberration.
