摘要
Detailed kinetic investigations on the oxidation of benzilic acid with quinolinium fluorochromate in aqueous acetic acid medium have been carried out. The reaction exhibits first-order dependence with respect to the concentration of the oxidant and Michaelis-Menten type kinetics on [substrate]. Inverse dependence of rate on acidity is observed. Involvement of Cr(II) in the reaction sequence is not supported by experimental observations. Absence of any effect on acrylonitrile rules out the possibility of one-electron oxidation. Mn(II) has no significant effect in this conversion. Decomposition of the cyclic complex formed between the oxidant and substrate is assumed to be the slow and rate-limiting step.
