The coupled Finite Fracture Mechanics (FFM) criterion is applied to investigate the mixed mode fracture initiation in V-notched brittle elements. The analysis involves the determination of the crack propagation angle and of the critical value of the generalized stress intensity factor (SIF), which are supposed to be the governing failure parameters within brittle structural behavior. The criterion is validated by comparing its predictions with experimental data available in the literature and with results by other approaches based on a critical distance. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
