Effect of soaking in solvents on molecular orientation of rubbed polyimide film

We used reflection ellipsometry and infrared absorption spectroscopy to investigate the effect of soaking rubbed polyimide films in solvents. This enabled us to clarify the influence of washing on polyimide films after rubbing, in the fabrication process of liquid crystal display devices. It was found that soaking in solvents caused disordering of the polyimide molecules, thinning of the molecular ordered layer and increase of the tilt angle of principal dielectric axis of the rubbed polyimide film. However, there was no indication that soaking in solvents caused a chemical reaction in rubbed polyimide films.
