Plaster of Paris-Reinforced Nanocomposites of Poly (2-hydroxyethyl Methacrylate-Co-acrylamide) as Alternative Orthopedic Material

摘要
The present study is an attempt to develop a ceramic/polymer composite made by grafting 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and acrylamide (Am) onto polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using free radical polymerization method and impregnating plaster of paris (PP) into the grafted polymer matrix. The prepared composites were characterized by Fourier transform spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction studies, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Scanning Electron Microscopy. The composites also showed adequately good compressive strength and modulus. The water sorption behavior and porosity were found to be dependent on the chemical composition of the matrix. The in vitro blood compatibility of the nanocomposite was also determined.
