Teaching About Gender: Rewards and Challenges

This article is a comment on the special issue of the Psychology of Men & Masculinity titled, "Teaching the Psychology of Men: A Call to Action." The authors of the articles report on the approximate number of courses on the psychology of men and masculinity that are offered, show how teaching such a course relates to the mission of APA Division 51 (Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity), and share information about their syllabi and approaches to teaching their courses. In this article, the author reminisces about her early years teaching a course on the psychology of women and shares some thoughts about the importance of teaching about gender and the rewards and challenges associated with doing so. She also offers some advice about topics and theoretical and pedagogical approaches to teaching about men and masculinity.
