Rotation between markers of systemic vascular inflammation and smoking in women

We conducted an analysis among apparently healthy women enrolled in the Women's Health Study, to determine the relation between baseline high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule type 1, P-selectin, and E-selectin with smoking status. We found that circulating levels of vascular inflammatory markers are independently related to smoking status in women, suggesting that smoking may promote atherothrombosis, at least in part, through vascular inflammation.
