摘要：

This paper begins with a discussion of various identity threats in the social-political arena that bring the group aspect of our personal identity to the forefront. It then goes on to describe the development of religious group identity and its relation to violence between religious groups, with the Hindu-Muslim violence in India as in main illustration.
