Questions were raised to the MC staff about the acceptance of the threads on threaded fasteners using GO/NO GO plug and ring gages. A majority of fastener threads used in the nuclear industry were screened using GO/NO GO plug and ring gages. A proposal was made to the NRC staff that switching from the GO/NO GO gages to variables gages would result in tighter control over fastener thread quality and would lead to a drop in fastener failures due to poor thread quality. The NRC staff conducted a thorough investigation into this matter and could not conclude that fastener performance in nuclear applications would be affected by the method of thread gaging used to accept or reject threads.
