Pretransitional Kerr effect and nonlinear dielectric effect in the isotropic phase of the isotropic to smectic-E phase transition

摘要：

We extend our previous phenomenological theory to describe the electro-optic Kerr effect and nonlinear dielectric effect in the vicinity of the isotropic to smectic-E phase transition. We find the analytical expressions for the Kerr constant and frequency dependent nonlinear dielectric effect in the isotropic phase above the isotropic to smectic-E phase transition. The electrically induced pretransitional effects follow the classical 1/(T-T*) behavior. The theoretical predictions are found to be in good agreement with experimental results.
