摘要
This paper discusses the engineering considerations and increasing necessity for real-time current measurements and forecasts in support of deep water exploratory drilling programmes. The nature of currents in deep water is discussed and their effects on offshore structures are outlined. Global Environmental and Ocean Sciences' rig-based real-time current monitoring system is described, both in terms of instrumentation and deployment methodology. A selection of graphical displays of measurements and forecasts are provided that are used in operational decision making. The cost and safety benefits of real-time current measurements are summarized and possible future developments in real-time spatial and temporal forecasts are discussed.
