A new lariat crown ether ligand N,N'-bis(3-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-pyridylmethyl)-1,10-diaza-4,7,13,16-tetraoxacyclooctadecane and its copper nitrate complex have been prepared. They have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, LTV and H-1 NMR spectroscopies. The crystal and molecular structures of [Cu(C26H40N4O6)](NO3)(2) have been determined by X-ray diffraction. It belongs to the triclinic crystal system with a space group P1. Structure analysis shows that the copper ion is coordinated to two nitrogen and two oxygen atoms of the crown ether ring and to hydroxyl oxygen atoms of the pyridine rings. The coordination polyhedron is an elongated distorted octahedron. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.. All rights reserved.
