In this paper, a new idea of designing metallic damper is presented. This type of damper is called as "dual functions" metallic damper, because it has two features, which are high initial stiffness and good energy-dissipation capability. Quasi-static tests with the new types of dampers are carried out. The "dual functions" metallic dampers were applied in actual steel structure. In order to calculate and compare seismic responses of the steel structure with and without metallic dampers, a three-dimensional frame structure model is made with ADPL language in ANSYS program. The results show that the metallic dampers with the "dual functions" presented here not only provide certain stiffness in the normal application, but also are of good ability of the seismic energy dissipation.
