Bridgeless Boost-Buck based Universal PFC Converter with Wide Output Voltage for Onboard Battery Charging Applications

The boost-derived power factor correction (PFC) converters in onboard battery chargers are ineffective when battery voltage is less than the maximum voltage of the supply. This paper proposes a new bridgeless boost-buck PFC converter to provide a wide range of DC voltage. A dual-loop control with an edge-triggered mode selection circuit for a seamless transition is presented. Consequently, it eliminates subharmonic oscillations, controls the output DC voltage, and maintains the unity power factor at the grid side. Furthermore, an active harmonic elimination (AHE) controller is being developed to suppress the prominent 3rd harmonic in the PFC converters' reference current. A 3.3 kW boost-buck PFC converter is designed on the MATLAB/Simulink platform. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PFC converter delivers a wide range of DC voltage ranging from 250 to 400 V from universal AC input (85-265 V, 50/60 Hz). The AHE-based controller maintains the unity power factor (UPF) with tolerable harmonic distortion on the grid side.
