It has been a challenging problem to de-noise and yet preserve all fringes perfectly especially for high density fringes in optical interferometry methods. In this paper, we present the new second-order single oriented partial differential equations (PDE) filtering models for optical interferometry fringes with high density based on the variational methods. We test the proposed models on two computer-simulated and two experimentally obtained fringe patterns, respectively that include the regions with high fringe density, and compare our models with related PDE models. The experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed filter performs well in noise suppression and fringe preservation even for the regions with very high density. The proposed single oriented PDE models can be extended to automatically other double oriented or couple oriented PDE models. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
