Domain structures and phase transitions of PMNT single crystals

(1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-xPbTiO(3) (PMNT) single crystals with different ratios of PbTiO3 (PT) to Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PMN) were grown by the modified Bridgman technique. The domain structures of PMNT single crystals were investigated by transmission synchrotron topography. It was found that the PMNT single crystals possessed rhombohedral phase when the ratio of PT to PMN was smaller than 0.33. Whereas both rhombohedral and tetragonal phases coexisted in PMNT single crystal when the ratio of PT to PMN reached 0.33. In the meantime, the distinct morphotropic phase boundary was observed. The variations of dielectric constant with temperature for PMNT single crystals were measured by HP-4284A LCR meter. Two phase transitions: rhombohedral (3 m)-> tetragonal (4 mm)-> cubic (m3 m) occurred at various temperatures for PMNT crystals with different PT contents. Low PT content corresponds to high rhombohedral to tetragonal and low tetragonal to cubic phase transition temperature, respectively. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
