Carbon precipitation in a Sigma=5 tilt boundary in molybdenum

摘要
Molybdenum bicrystals have been studied by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM) before and after a carburization treatment to determine the morphology of the carbides which are present in the boundary. In particular a new phase with a tetragonal structure taking shape of continuous thin film (similar to 1.5 nm) has been observed. It can be described as MoCx with x similar to 0.4. Mechanical tests using the 4 point bending method revealed that the boundary is stronger and the plasticity is enhanced when it is covered by the new MoCx phase.
