摘要
Surviving manuscripts describing glass production, dating from the first century to the late 16th century AD in Europe state that raw materials were added to glass batches in units or ratios of a 'part'. This paper discusses the definition of a 'part' and describes experiments to determine whether this measurement is by weight or volume. It is concluded that for European medieval glass production, using wood ash alkalis and sand, apart is a measurement by weight.
