Seed acyl-CoA elongases: the other system of fatty acid synthesis

摘要
Seed oils of some plant species are rich in very long chain fatty acids (VLCFA) and among them the most important is erucid acid. Erucic acid is the major component of HEAR thigh erucic acid rapeseed) rape (Brassica napus) varieties. The enzymes responsible for the VLCFA synthesis are elongases. Two different types of elongases exist in the rapeseeds. The ATP dependent (type I) synthesizes VLCFA from an unknown endogenous substrate in the presence of malonyl-CoA and it absolutly requires ATP. The acyl-CoA elongase (type 2) uses an acyl-CoA as precursor, malonyl-CoA as elongating agent and does not require ATP. In this paper biochemical, molecular biology and biotechnological aspects of elongases are discussed.
