Characterization of HIPed and extruded powder metallurgy titanium aluminide

Titanium aluminides have attracted considerable interest as substitutes for nickel-based superalloys or conventional titanium alloys, e.g., as a potential material for high-temperature applications in gas turbine engines. Here first steps towards optimizing a commercially viable route for the manufacture of powder metallurgy (PM) aeroengine components are reported. Specimens prepared from extruded PM material were successfully forged at 900 °C with a high reduction ratio. Once optimized, this processing route is expected to be commercially viable for the production of gas turbine components.
