Performance of lithium/amorphous V2O5-P2O5 cells with different electrolytes

This paper examines the influence of the composition of LiAsF6-ethylene carbonate (EC)/propylene carbonate (PC) binary mixed solvent electrolytes on the discharge capacity and the charge-discharge cycle life of AA-type lithium (Li) metal/amorphous (a-) V-2 O-5-P-2 O-5 (95 : 5 in molar ratio) cells. It also examines the effect of addition of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2 MeTHF) to an EC/PC mixed system. Furthermore, fundamental abuse tests are carried out on the Li/a-V-2 O-5-P-2 O-5 cells consisting of a heating best at 130 degrees C and an external short circuit test at 25 degrees C. The cycle life reaches its maximum value at an EC/PC ratio of 1 : 9 by volume, although the Li cycling efficiency obtained in the Li-half cell test increases with an increase in EC content in the EC/PC mixed system. The addition of 2 MeTHF improves the cycle life. Fundamental cell safety is ensured by the above abuse tests. These results derive from the interaction between the cathode and electrolyte which leads to the formation of film containing vanadium on the Li anode surface. The film is different from that usually formed in Li metal batteries by the reaction between the electrolyte and Li.
