The availibility of marker vaccines includes and companion diagnostic tests enabled the use of vaccination in the eradication of pseudorabies virus (PRV, Aujeszky's disease virus). This article reviews studies that were published on this subject during the last decade. The review focuses on the effectiveness of vaccination under field conditions. In addition, herd, management and local factors that are associated with the within-herd and between-herd transmission of PRV are discussed. It is concluded that even in an enzootically infected pig dense region, an intensive area-wide vaccination programme call sharply reduce PRV circulation. If such a programme is accompanied by zoo-sanitary measures, of which prevention of the introduction of PRV-infected stock is the most important, eradication of PRV is feasible.
