摘要：

Axillary lymph node dissection plays a pivotal role in breast cancer surgery in staging and prognosis, but the extent of the dissection remains controversial. Sampling of level I lymph nodes may miss nodal metastases. Axillary lymph node dissection may result in considerable morbidity. Recently, intraoperative lymph node mapping with sentinel lymph node biopsy has been used as a minimally invasive but efficient alternative to axillary lymph node dissection to identify lymph nodes containing metastases in patients with breast cancer.
