摘要
A common manifestation of cancer is the development of brain metastases. For decades, whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) has been the standard palliative therapy for brain metastases, despite significant acute and late toxicity, and disappointing control rates. Surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) have emerged as effective treatments for brain metastases, providing better local control rates than WBRT. SRS can successfully address multiple metastases, and avoids the detrimental cognitive effects of WBRT. Retrospective and prospective randomized studies demonstrate a role for SRS in patients with 1-3 brain metastases, and indicate that SRS may be a suitable alternative to WBRT in many patients with multiple brain metastases.
