Understanding has four main levels including knowing little about a subject, being somewhat familiar with it, knowing it well enough to use it or even teach it, and really understanding it which is the highest level. Really understanding a subject allows one to both explain it well and to innovate. Moving from ignorance of an area to partial knowledge, and from that to a good grasp is something most poeple can do from either attending a class or self-study. However moving from understanding an area to really knowing it is more difficult. This is because skills, or lack thereof, run in families.
