摘要
Prerequisite for an informed treatment decision is an accurate understanding of the respective risks and side effects. However, many patients have difficulties in dealing with statistics. The understanding of numerical risks can be improved with a complexity-reduced presentation of risk information, for instance by using fact boxes. The basic principle is acomparative presentation of frequencies (1 in 1000) instead of percentages (0.1%) for different risk groups or for intervention vs. control groups. In addition to the individual patient's understanding of numbers, risk comprehension is also influenced by psychosocial variables. In particular, illness-specific fears, motives, anecdotal information, and previous experiences of apatient can lead to aperception of risks that deviates from the objective risks. Knowledge of these factors and their effects can support the physician in risk communication and shared decision making in daily clinical practice.
