Grating based phase contrast imaging has recently been proposed for use in preclinical and clinical imaging. However, a major limiting factor in its implementation is the time consuming phase stepping procedure. There are several alternative methods for phase signal extraction which may improve the temporal performance of the imaging system. In this work, each method is compared with conventional phase stepping. The results show that each method may improve the acquisition time of a grating based phase contrast imaging system, though not without sacrificing performance elsewhere.
