Structural and Luminescence Properties of Er-Doped Zinc-Alumino-Silicate Glass Ceramic

Transparent Er-doped Zinc Aluminosilictae (Er:ZAS) glass ceramics were synthesized by melting and subsequent heat treatment. The microstructure of the samples was characterized using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. ZnO nanocrystals with the diameter of 23 nm formed in the quenched sample. An emission peak around 398 nm was observed for the quenched glass. The ZnO nanocrystals grew during heat treatment. The 398 nm emission disappeared after heat treatment, and a broad emission peak around 580 nm appeared. The energy transfer of ZnO nanocrystal to Er3+ ions in the glass is discussed.
