Liver and intestinal flukes

Trematode infections of the liver and gut exclusive of schistosomiasis include opisthorchiasis, fascioliasis, fasciolopsiasis, and several other less common helminthic infections. Chronic Opisthorchis liver fluke infections are endemic in Southeast Asia and are therefore prevalent among immigrants to North America from this region. Humans become infected with these trematode parasites by eating fluke-infested fish or water plants. The diagnosis can be made by stool Examination for eggs or specific serology. Praziquantel is an effective treatment for ail fluke infections except fascioliasis.
