Three median alpha-levels of a fuzzy number A are introduced. Two of them are based on the vertical and horizontal dimensions of A, one on the cardinality of A. Approximation of fuzzy numbers by alpha-cuts associated with the median alpha-levels is discussed. Percentile characterizations of alpha-cuts with respect to the selected properties of fuzzy numbers are proposed. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
