Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, Forensic Autopsy Cases

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is a chronic lung disease that develops in newborns that have been under long-term high concentration and high-pressure mechanical ventilation. Recent medical developments increased the survival rates of the low birth weight infant; however, bronchopulmonary dysplasia is the most important complication observed in the long term in these infants. Medico legal autopsies of these cases (due to sudden death or malpractice) are important sources of knowledge for understanding the characteristics of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Six BPD cases who deceased while being treated in the intensive care unit have been presented.
