Effect of potassium on yield and quality of tomato

An experiment was conducted to study the efficiency response of two kinds of potassium sources (KCl and K2SO4) with similar quantities of potassium on yield and quality potentials of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum L.). Four cultivars (Early urbana, ME Mobil, Super strain B and Super queen) were used in this study. The results showed that the use of KCl on Super queen cultivar afforded the highest yield (61.3 t/ha), which was 32% higher than with K2SO4. However early harvest, marketable yield, average fruit weight, percentage of dry weight and ascorbic acid increased by KCl treatment than those from K2SO4 sources. Other characteristics such as composition of fruits, amount of soluble solids, number of trusses per plant, fruit set, fruit number, etc. were significantly similar to those shown by other cultivars.
