Cryogenic cycling of polymeric composite materials: Effects of cure conditions on microcracking

摘要
The effect of cure temperature on the response of polymeric composite materials to cryogenic cycling was evaluated through the use of a model prepreg system. Symmetric and unsymmetric carbon fiber/epoxy laminates were fabricated to examine the development of thermal stresses and microcracks at cryogenic temperatures. It was found that higher cure temperatures resulted in higher stress free temperatures of the laminates, which correlated directly to increased levels of microcracking in the laminates.
