Tobacco stem as raw material was pyrolyzed at temperatures of 300 degrees C, 500 degrees C and 700 degrees C to manufacture biochar. Elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the physicochemical properties of the resulting biochar. The results showed that with the increase in carbonization temperature, the yield, polar and hydrophilic components of biochar were reduced and the carbon content, ash content and aroma were increased, but when the temperature rose to a certain extent, the carbon content did not change significantly. FTIR results showed less biochar vibrational peaks but larger aromatic degree after carbonization at 700 degrees C, consistent with the elemental analysis. SEM showed a distribution of morepores on the rough layered structure of biochar pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C. It can offer more adsorption sites than the biochars prepared at other temperatures and makes it a suitable sorbent for industry.
